F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault and Recon) is a first-person close-quarters combat game for the PC. The story begins when a paramilitary force infiltrates a multi-billion dollar aerospace compound, and the government responds by sending in Special Forces.

The group loses contact with the government when an eerie signal interrupts radio communications--and when that interference subsides moments later, the team has been destroyed. That's where you come in. As part of a classified strike team created to deal with threats no one else can handle, your mission is simple: eliminate the intruders at any cost, determine the origin of the signal, and contain the potential crisis before it gets out of control.

First Impressions

F.E.A.R. is a first person shooter and psychological horror game. The title is an acronym for "First Encounter Assault Recon," the fictional paramilitary organization in the game of which the player is a part of. F.E.A.R. is rated M for mature, it was developed by Monolith Productions and published by Vivendi Universal. I personally played this game on my PC however it is also available for XBox 360 and Playstion 3, the game was released for PC on October 18th 2005. F.E.A.R. is recognized for its particularly advanced AI and its unique blend of horror and action. Well, I have to say I did enjoy this game.

Story

I always appreciate it when a video game has a great storyline and F.E.A.R. definately has a good storyline. You really do have to pay attention to the little tid-bits of insight into the story that lie scattered throughout the game in the form laptops and answering machine messages that you can access, but it is worth the effort. I will not divulge too much information about the story as I do not want to ruin it for anyone. Here is the setup, you assume the role of the F.E.A.R. team's "Point Man," who is only referred to by his title throughout the game. You and rest of the F.E.A.R. team are dispatched to apprehend Paxton Fettel, the telepathic commander to a battalion of genetically engineered clone soldiers called "Replicas." Fettel has apparently gone insane and broken out of a holding cell within a facility of the Armacham Technology Corporation, a corporation that develops weapons and equipment for the military, the Replica soldiers were one of their projects. Throughout your mission you have to fight Fettel's replicas, cope with strange phenomenon and uncover a dark secret involving a gohstly little girl.

Gameplay

The overall gameplay was fairly satisfying, however I suppose my only complaint is that the camera function is not very smooth and a bit jerky. I found myself not being able to play for too long a period without giving myself a bit of a headache. That isn't to say that the graphics themselves weren't nice, they were. The graphics are simple without being overly simple and everything in the game looks clean and clear. This coincides with the game's atmosphere and overall theme, it is meant to be more like a Japanese horror game in that the enviroment was not totally creepy all the time and yet did not rely on jump scares which result in more surprise than, dare I say it, fear. One moment you would lose yourself in shooty action and then the next you would be uneasy as it was unaturally quiet and the lights flickered as you caught a glimpse of "something." This transition gave the horror a more profound effect as you were not expecting it, but at the same time it wasn't "in your face." There are times in the game when the "Point Man" is plagued with disturbing visions and flashbacks which give clues to the characters' past, at times you may even have to fight these malevolent hallucinations. The combat aspect of this game was done very well, as I had mentioned early this game has some advanced AI which makes enemies more deadly and tactical. Setting up for to long in one position may not be wise as the Replicas can employ different tactics such as flanking, surpressive fire, and taking cover. Prancing about in the open is not an option as your enemies are very good shots. This presents a welcome challenge, as it takes skill and a bit of cunning to take out a sqaud of enemy soldiers. However you have plenty of tools at your disposal too, along with the ability to melee in a few different ways when the enemy gets too close for comfort you can carry up to three weapons at a time that vary between submachine-guns, assault rifles, pistols, shotguns, a few futuristic rocket launchers, and even "the penetrator" a sort of semi-automatic crossbow gun which fires large metal bolts that nail enemies to the wall. It is also good to utilize grenades against tightly grouped enemies, as well as use remote and proximity mines to prevent flanking. You also get reflex time, a function that similar to Max Payne's "Bullet Time" slows down everything around you, making your job a whole lot easier. You choose when to use it, however it has to recharge after each use. While the reflex time does help to get past some of the more challenging opponents and situations I found myself neglecting to use it more often than not, so for the most part it is a bit unnecessary. Although I feel that the combat was done well it does tend to get repetative due largely to the lack of variety in your enemies as well as the enviroments in which fighting takes place. Throughout the game you can find syringes, blue ones will permanently improve your health and green ones will permanently improve your reflexes. You also get a headlamp which is useful in dark places such as air ducts, however it runs on a battery which runs out and then must recharge, which I found slightly annoying.

Conclusion

All in all this was a wonderful game and I definately recomend it, in fact I think it would make a good movie. It makes a good experience for fans of both (tasteful) FPS and Horror genres. I would say that it has a moderate replay value as I personally played through it twice. It also includes online multiplayer which I have yet to try. Considering everything I give this game 3 1/2 stars out of 5.
